Selling an everyday car

This covers the ordinary car: a hatchback or estate that starts every morning, has been serviced more or less on time, and is no longer needed because you are leaving, changing cars or no longer need two.

What this covers

Most ages

There is no fixed cut off. For most models built from around 2008 there is a steady Dutch used market. Older cars can still get an offer.

Serviced, more or less on schedule

A service book with stamps helps, and so do garage invoices. If the last service is a few months overdue, tell us. That is fine.

Everyday wear

Stone chips, a kerbed wheel, a worn seat or a scuffed bumper are what a used car looks like. We value them as normal wear.

Still on the road

It drives, it has a valid APK (the Dutch roadworthiness test), and there are no red warning lights. If one of these does not apply, we still buy the car, and one of the other pages below explains what changes.

When selling is the sensible move

  • You are moving out of the Netherlands and want the car out of your name before you deregister from your municipality (gemeente).
  • You are switching to a lease car, a company car or no car at all.
  • A second car is parked most of the time while the road tax and insurance keep running.
  • You would like one offer from a buyer, without selling privately on Marktplaats, the Dutch classifieds site.

What to tell us

The more of this you include, the more accurate the offer, and the less likely it is to change at the handover.

  1. The mileage, as exact as you can read it on the dashboard
  2. Whether you have the service book and any repair invoices
  3. Anything that is worn or not quite right, however small
  4. Extras that come with the car, such as a second set of wheels or a towbar

Questions about this kind of car

Is my car too old for an offer?

Probably not. There is no fixed age limit. Enter your number plate and mileage, and tell us about the condition. We look at every request.

Should I sell before or after I get my next car?

That is up to you. You can ask for an offer now and choose a handover day later, so you are not without a car in between. Your offer stays open until you answer it.

Do photos really change the offer?

They make it more accurate. With clear photos of the outside, the inside and the dashboard, we can value your car itself and the offer is less likely to change at the handover.

What paperwork do I need to sell my car?

You need your registration card (kentekencard), both parts of the registration code (tenaamstellingscode), a valid passport or ID card and all the car keys. If the car still has the old paper registration from before 2014, bring that instead of the card. We take care of the RDW transfer, and you receive the proof of transfer (vrijwaringsbewijs), which shows the car is no longer in your name.
