Selling your Volkswagen Polo

The Polo is one of the most common small cars on Dutch roads. There are buyers for almost every version, from a ten year old petrol hatchback to a recent automatic.

The Volkswagen Polo on the Dutch market

Many Polos for sale in the Netherlands are five door petrol hatchbacks between five and fifteen years old. The car is small enough for narrow streets and tight parking spaces, which is one reason it is a popular first car for people new to the country.

Two generations make up most of the used market. The fifth generation (known as the 6R and 6C) was built from 2009 to 2017. The sixth generation (AW) followed in 2017 and is slightly larger. Your number plate tells us which one you have.

What moves the value

No price estimates here, because a number published today is wrong by next month. This is what we actually look at.

Which engine

Most Polos have a small petrol engine, usually a TSI turbo or a simpler non turbo unit. Some early 1.2 TSI engines from around 2009 to 2012 had timing chain problems. If the chain on yours has been replaced, tell us and keep the invoice.

Manual or DSG automatic

Most Polos are manual. The automatic is usually a DSG, a dual clutch gearbox. We ask how it changes gear when pulling away and in slow traffic, and whether it has been serviced.

Mileage and history

A Polo with a service book and garage invoices is easier to value at any mileage. Without them we rely more on the condition and the mileage records in the RDW register.

Interior wear

Wear on the driver's seat and the steering wheel is normal. Mention anything broken, such as a cracked dashboard, a missing trim panel or a seat that no longer adjusts.

Worth mentioning in your request

Your plate gives us the basics. These are the things only you can tell us.

  1. Which engine and gearbox it has, if you know
  2. Whether the timing chain or belt has been replaced, with the invoice if you have it
  3. Whether the service history is complete, and whether you have the book
  4. Any warning lights that are on, or that come on and go away

Questions about selling a Volkswagen Polo

Which Polo do I have?

You do not need to know. When you enter your number plate, we look up the year, engine and fuel in the RDW register. That tells us the generation and the version.

Does a DSG gearbox change the offer?

It can. We ask how the gearbox behaves and whether it has been serviced. A DSG that changes smoothly and has a service record is valued as normal.

My Polo needs work before the next APK. Should I fix it first?

Usually not. The APK is the Dutch roadworthiness test. Tell us what the garage found and we include it in the offer. Paying for the repairs first rarely earns back what they cost.

What paperwork do I need to sell my car?

You need your registration card (kentekencard), both parts of the registration code (tenaamstellingscode), a valid passport or ID card and all the car keys. If the car still has the old paper registration from before 2014, bring that instead of the card. We take care of the RDW transfer, and you receive the proof of transfer (vrijwaringsbewijs), which shows the car is no longer in your name.
