Selling your car in Amstelveen

Amstelveen, just south of Amsterdam, is home to a large international community. Many families here have a car, and many sell it when a contract ends. We can help with that, in English.

Selling a car in Amstelveen

Amstelveen sits directly south of Amsterdam and has a large international population. The head office of KLM is here, the International School of Amsterdam is in Amstelveen, and the Zuidas business district and Schiphol are both a short drive away.

Compared with central Amsterdam, more households here use a car every day, for school runs, shopping and commuting to Schiphol or the business parks. Tram line 25 runs to Amsterdam Zuid, and many families keep a second car for everything else.

When a posting or contract ends, the house, the school and the car all have to be settled by the same date. Asking for an offer a few weeks ahead gives you time to plan the handover around the move.

Worth knowing in Amstelveen

Local rules change, so check the municipality's website for anything official. Each note links to its source.

Your residents' parking permit

In Amstelveen a residents' parking permit (bewonersvergunning) is linked to one number plate, and it can only be used for a car in your name or your own lease car. After the sale, change the plate to your next car or end the permit through the municipality.

Amsterdam's diesel zone next door

Amstelveen itself has no environmental zone for passenger cars. Amsterdam's zone for older diesel cars starts at the A10, just north of Amstelveen. If you drive an older diesel into Amsterdam, check whether your car is allowed.

Leaving the country

If you are moving abroad, try to sell before you deregister from the municipality (gemeente). Until the car is transferred, the road tax, the insurance and any fines stay in your name.

Questions from sellers in Amstelveen

We have two cars. Can we sell both?

Yes. Ask for an offer for each car separately, with its own number plate and mileage. Each car is registered to a person, so the person named on each registration needs to take part in that sale.

Can we keep using the car until we leave?

Yes. You can accept an offer and choose a handover day close to your departure. Tell us the date when you accept, so we can plan it with you.

The car is registered to my employer or lease company. Can I sell it?

Not yourself. A lease car is registered to the lease company, and it decides what happens to the car at the end of the contract. Only a car registered in your own name can be sold to us by you.

What paperwork do I need to sell my car?

You need your registration card (kentekencard), both parts of the registration code (tenaamstellingscode), a valid passport or ID card and all the car keys. If the car still has the old paper registration from before 2014, bring that instead of the card. We take care of the RDW transfer, and you receive the proof of transfer (vrijwaringsbewijs), which shows the car is no longer in your name.
