Selling your Volkswagen Golf

The Golf comes in more versions than almost any other car: petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid and electric, manual and automatic, hatchback and estate. Two Golfs from the same year can be worth quite different amounts.

The Volkswagen Golf on the Dutch market

Three generations cover most Golfs for sale in the Netherlands: the Golf 6 (2008 to 2012), the Golf 7 (2012 to 2020) and the Golf 8 (from 2020). The estate is called the Variant. The register tells us which generation and body style you have.

Many Dutch Golfs started as company or lease cars. The plug-in hybrid Golf GTE and the electric e-Golf were popular company cars here because of lower company car tax. Ex lease cars often have high mileage and a complete dealer service history.

What moves the value

No price estimates here, because a number published today is wrong by next month. This is what we actually look at.

Which version it is

Engine, gearbox and trim level move the value more on a Golf than on a smaller car. A GTI, a GTD and a basic 1.0 TSI are very different cars to value.

DSG gearboxes

Many Golfs have a DSG automatic. Smaller engines usually have the seven speed dry clutch version, larger engines a wet clutch version that needs an oil change at set intervals. We ask whether that service has been done.

Plug-in hybrid and electric

For a GTE or an e-Golf, we ask about the charging cable, the battery range you see in daily use and any warnings from the hybrid or charging system.

Lease history

A full service book from a dealer counts in your favour, also at high mileage. If yours was a lease car, the history is usually complete.

Worth mentioning in your request

Your plate gives us the basics. These are the things only you can tell us.

  1. Which engine and gearbox it has
  2. Whether it was a lease or company car before
  3. When the DSG gearbox was last serviced, if it is an automatic
  4. For a GTE or e-Golf: whether you have the charging cable, and the range you get

Questions about selling a Volkswagen Golf

Is a Golf Variant valued differently from the hatchback?

Yes, the estate and the hatchback are separate cars on the used market. You do not need to tell us which one you have, because the register shows the body style.

Do you buy the Golf GTE and the e-Golf?

Yes. Tell us about the charging cable, the range you get and any warning lights. We take the battery and charging system into account in the offer.

My Golf was a lease car. Do I need the lease paperwork?

No. What matters is that the car is now registered in your name and that you have both parts of the registration code (tenaamstellingscode). A dealer service record from the lease period helps the offer.

What if I think the offer is too low?

Tell us. You can suggest an amount of your own on your offer page and we will look at it properly. If we cannot agree to it, we tell you so.
