Selling your car in Rotterdam

Many people in Rotterdam came for work in and around the port and the companies that depend on it. When a contract ends, the car often has to go before you do. We can help with that, in English.

Selling a car in Rotterdam

Rotterdam is more of a driving city than Amsterdam. The centre was rebuilt after 1940 with wide roads, the ring road and the river tunnels connect north and south, and many people here use their car every day.

As a result, many cars for sale in Rotterdam have high mileage. 200,000 km is common, and we still make an offer. Motorway kilometres are easier on a car than short trips across town, and we take that into account.

Port and contract work often runs to dates that move. You can ask for an offer before you know your last week, and arrange the handover later. Nothing is fixed until you accept.

Worth knowing in Rotterdam

Local rules change, so check the municipality's website for anything official. Each note links to its source.

No environmental zone for passenger cars

Rotterdam no longer has an environmental zone (milieuzone) for passenger cars, so older diesels may drive in the city. Other cities do have one, for example Amsterdam, The Hague and Utrecht, which matters if your buyer or your commute is there.

Cars that have worked hard

Commuting and port kilometres add up fast. High mileage lowers the offer, usually by less than people expect when most of it was motorway driving and the car has a service history.

Contracts that end early

If your contract ends sooner than planned, ask for an offer now and keep the handover date open. Declining later costs you nothing.

We arrange the collection with you anywhere in Rotterdam and the towns around it, from a street in Kralingen to a car park on the south bank. If the car is in a building with a barrier or a height limit, tell us when you ask, because it changes which vehicle we send.

Questions from sellers in Rotterdam

My car has more than 200,000 km. Is it still worth asking?

Yes. Give us the exact mileage and tell us whether it was mostly motorway driving. A service history makes a real difference to the offer at this mileage.

Can I ask for an offer before I know my leaving date?

Yes. Your offer stays open until you answer it, and you choose the handover day when you accept. If your plans change, tell us.

Does Rotterdam have an environmental zone for cars?

Not for passenger cars. Rotterdam no longer has one, so it does not affect a sale here. Amsterdam, The Hague and Utrecht do have zones for older diesel cars.

How does the handover work?

We agree a time and place with you. We check the car together and transfer it out of your name at the RDW on the spot. You are paid at the handover, and you receive the proof of transfer (vrijwaringsbewijs) the same day.
