Your questions, answered
Selling a car here comes with Dutch words and rules that nobody explains when you arrive. Here are clear answers to the questions that come up along the way.
Getting started
Do you offer support in English?
Yes. Every email, message and phone call is in English, from your first question to the handover. When a Dutch document is involved, we tell you what it is and what to do with it.
What do I need to ask for an offer?
Your number plate (kenteken) and the mileage. We look up the make, model, year and fuel in the Dutch vehicle register. You do not need any paperwork until the handover.
Does asking for an offer cost anything?
No. Asking is free and you are not committing to anything.
How long does it take to sell my car?
The request is short, because the number plate fills in most of the details. A clear request with photos is the easiest for us to answer. If something is unclear, we ask you first. Once you accept, you choose the handover day.
My plate is not found. What now?
Check it for typos first, because letters and digits are easy to mix up. If it still does not come up, the car may be registered abroad or recently exported. You can also fill in the car's details by hand, or send us a message and we will look at it with you.
Your car
Do you buy cars with damage or high mileage?
We do. Tell us about the damage or the mileage and we take it into account in the offer.
Do you buy cars without a valid APK?
Yes. The APK is the Dutch roadworthiness test. You do not need a new test before you sell the car to us. Tell us when it expired or what it failed on.
What if the car does not start?
Tell us in the form. A car that does not drive is worth less, and we can still make an offer. We then arrange a way to collect it that does not depend on it driving.
Do I need to clean or repair anything first?
No. Repairs before a sale rarely earn back what they cost, and we make the offer on the car as it is. A quick clean is welcome but not expected.
Paperwork and handover
What paperwork do I need to sell my car?
You need your registration card (kentekencard), both parts of the registration code (tenaamstellingscode), a valid passport or ID card and all the car keys. If the car still has the old paper registration from before 2014, bring that instead of the card. We take care of the RDW transfer, and you receive the proof of transfer (vrijwaringsbewijs), which shows the car is no longer in your name.
How does the handover work?
We agree a time and place with you. We check the car together and transfer it out of your name at the RDW on the spot. You are paid at the handover, and you receive the proof of transfer (vrijwaringsbewijs) the same day.
Do you collect the car?
Yes, free of charge and anywhere in the Netherlands. Tell us where the car is parked and whether it drives, so we can plan the day.
Can I sell a car that is not in my name?
Only the person the car is registered to can sell it, because the transfer needs their registration code and their passport or ID card. If the car is in someone else's name, that person has to take part in the sale.
What is the RDW transfer?
The RDW is the Dutch vehicle authority. Every car is registered to a person or company in its register. Transferring the car moves it out of your name. Until that has happened, the car and its road tax, fines and liability are still yours.
What is a vrijwaringsbewijs?
The vrijwaringsbewijs is the proof of transfer you receive when the car is moved out of your name in the RDW register. Keep it safe. From the date and time on it, you are no longer responsible for the car, including road tax and any fines. The road tax stops by itself and the Belastingdienst (the Dutch tax authority) refunds what you paid in advance. Let your insurer know the car has been sold so the policy ends too.
I am leaving the Netherlands. When should I sell?
Before you deregister from your municipality (gemeente), if you can. Selling while you still live here is simpler, and it stops the road tax and insurance on a car you no longer use.
The offer
How do I receive and review my offer?
You receive an email with a link to your own offer page. That page shows the amount and lets you accept it, decline it or suggest an amount of your own. Take your time. There is no obligation.
How is the offer worked out?
We look at what the register says about the car, what you told us about its condition, and what that model is worth on the Dutch market now. Photos help, because they let us judge your car itself.
How long does my offer stay open?
Your offer stays valid with no end date, so take your time to think it over. It stays on your offer page until you accept or decline it, unless we send you a new one. If you have not replied after a few days, we send you one reminder email. We do not send more than that.
What if I think the offer is too low?
Tell us. You can suggest an amount of your own on your offer page and we will look at it properly. If we cannot agree to it, we tell you so.
When do I get paid?
At the handover. Once we have checked the car and transferred it out of your name at the RDW, we pay you straight away.
