Privacy policy
When you tell us about your car, you trust us with your details. This page explains what we receive, what we do with it, and what we do not do.
Last updated: 30 October 2026
1. Who is responsible
This policy covers sellcar.nl. We are responsible for the personal data described on this page, and we handle it under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and Dutch law.
For any question about your data, or to use one of your rights, contact us by WhatsApp or +31 6 12 40 80 16. A person reads it and answers in English.
2. What we collect
When you ask for an offer, we receive what you type in or upload yourself:
- Your contact details: your name, email address and phone number.
- Details of the car: the number plate, and the make, model, year, fuel and colour we look up for that plate in the public RDW register. If you describe the car by hand, we receive what you enter instead.
- What you tell us about the car: the mileage, whether it drives, any damage, your notes and, if you name one, the price you have in mind.
- Photos of the car, if you add them.
- Your reply to our offer: whether you accept or decline it, an amount or reason you give us, and when you would like the handover.
- That you opened your offer page, when, and the type of browser and device you used, so we know the offer reached you.
- How you found us: the page you first landed on, the website that sent you, campaign tags in the link and whether you came from an ad. For an ad we keep only the fact that there was a click, never the click code itself.
If you ask us to call you back, we receive your name, your phone number and the part of the day that suits you, and we use them only to call you back.
Your IP address is used for a moment to stop the form being flooded with requests. It is not stored with your request.
3. Why we use it
- To look at your request and make you an offer for your car.
- To contact you about your request by email, phone or WhatsApp.
- To send you the offer by email, with a personal link where you can accept or decline it.
- To arrange the sale and the handover with you once you accept.
- To see which ways of finding us actually lead to requests. We look at sources, not at you as a person.
We do not sell your data. We do not send newsletters or advertising, and we do not use your details for anything not listed here.
4. Our legal basis
We process your details because you asked us for an offer, and we need them to make one and, if you accept, to carry out the sale. In GDPR terms that is taking steps at your request before entering into a contract, and then performing it.
Keeping the form free of abuse and learning which channels work are based on our legitimate interest. We keep both as limited as we can.
Some data we keep because the law requires it, for example the records of a completed purchase that Dutch tax law asks a business to keep.
5. Who helps us process it
We use a small number of service providers. They handle data only on our instructions and only for this service:
- Storage: your request and the photos you upload are kept securely.
- Email: the confirmation and your offer are sent through an email service.
- Internal notification: when a request or a callback request comes in, our team gets a private message about it, so someone picks it up quickly. Only our team can read it.
- Vehicle register: to look up the car, the plate is sent to the open data service of the RDW, the Dutch vehicle authority. Only the plate is sent, never your name or contact details.
- Statistics: a privacy-friendly statistics service without cookies counts visits and the steps of the sell form. It does not receive your name, email address or phone number, and nothing is measured on your personal offer page.
Beyond that we only share data when the law obliges us to. If one of these providers processes data outside the European Economic Area, we rely on the safeguards the GDPR requires for such transfers.
6. How long we keep it
We keep your details for as long as we need them for the purposes on this page, and no longer.
If you do not sell your car to us, we keep the request for a limited time so we can answer if you come back to it, and we delete it sooner if you ask us to. If you do sell it to us, we keep what the law requires us to keep about the purchase, for as long as the law requires it. In the Netherlands that is usually seven years for financial records.
The note about how you found us that is kept in your own browser is no longer used after 30 days. The cookies page has the details.
7. Cookies and browser storage
We set no cookies and run no advertising trackers. To see how the site is used, we use privacy-friendly statistics without cookies, and that data is not linked to you. That is why there is no cookie banner. Your browser keeps a few small notes for the sell form and for knowing how you found us, and those only reach us if you send a request. The cookies page lists them.
8. Security
We protect your details with measures that fit the data: encrypted connections, access to requests only for the people who handle them, and a personal offer link that is long and very hard to guess.
No system is perfectly safe. If something ever went wrong with your data, we would tell you and the Dutch Data Protection Authority where the law requires it.
9. Your rights
Under the GDPR you have the right to:
- see which personal data we hold about you;
- have incorrect data corrected;
- have your data deleted;
- object to processing, or ask us to limit it;
- receive your data in a common format, to take it elsewhere.
Send your request by WhatsApp or +31 6 12 40 80 16 with your name and number plate, so we can find your request. We answer within one month, as the GDPR requires. We may ask you to confirm who you are before we hand over or delete anything.
10. Complaints
If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, please tell us first and we will try to put it right.
You can also complain to the Dutch Data Protection Authority, the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens (autoriteitpersoonsgegevens.nl), or to the data protection authority of the EU country where you live.
11. Changes to this policy
We update this policy when the way we work changes. The date at the top of the page shows when that last happened.
