Selling your car in The Hague

The Hague (Den Haag) has one of the largest international communities in the country, built around the ministries, the embassies and the international courts. People arrive on a posting and leave on one, and the car usually has to be dealt with before the flight.

Selling a car in The Hague

Postings in The Hague run to a calendar. When a posting ends, there is a fixed date by which the house must be empty and the car out of your name. Once that date is set, there is little room to move it.

Start earlier than feels necessary. Arranging a handover while you still live here is simple. Arranging one from abroad, after you have left, is much harder.

Many cars here are well looked after: a complete service history, a second car used for school runs and weekends, or a car bought new a few years ago and driven little since.

Worth knowing in The Hague

Local rules change, so check the municipality's website for anything official. Each note links to its source.

The diesel zone in the centre

The Hague has an environmental zone (milieuzone) in the city centre for diesel cars of older emission classes, and a separate zone around the Scheveningen harbour. Petrol cars are not affected. Check your plate if you drive an older diesel.

Cars on diplomatic plates

Cars on diplomatic (CD) plates are registered through a separate procedure. Tell us at the start and we will tell you honestly whether we can help.

Questions from sellers in The Hague

My posting ends next month. Is that enough time?

Usually, yes. Ask for an offer now, and choose a handover day before you deregister from the municipality. Keep your registration card and both parts of the registration code (tenaamstellingscode) somewhere you can find them during the move.

Can you buy a car with diplomatic plates?

Cars on CD plates follow a separate registration procedure. Tell us when you ask, and we will tell you whether we can help with that car.

Can I sell a diesel that is not allowed in the city centre zone?

Yes. The zone only limits where the car may drive. It can still be sold and transferred, and we arrange the collection with you.

What is a vrijwaringsbewijs?

The vrijwaringsbewijs is the proof of transfer you receive when the car is moved out of your name in the RDW register. Keep it safe. From the date and time on it, you are no longer responsible for the car, including road tax and any fines. The road tax stops by itself and the Belastingdienst (the Dutch tax authority) refunds what you paid in advance. Let your insurer know the car has been sold so the policy ends too.
