Selling your car in Utrecht

Utrecht sits in the middle of the country, at the centre of the Dutch rail network. Many people here hardly need a car, and it ends up parked far more than it is driven.

Selling a car in Utrecht

Utrecht University, the Utrecht Science Park and the hospitals bring in a steady international population that stays for a few years and then moves on. A car bought in the first month is often sold in the last.

The streets inside the old centre are narrow and parking is regulated, so a car here quickly becomes a monthly cost. Usually nothing is wrong with the car. It is simply no longer worth what it costs to keep.

Cars that stand still develop problems of their own: a flat battery, old tyres, an APK (the Dutch roadworthiness test) that expired without anyone noticing. None of that stops us making an offer, and it is rarely worth paying to fix before you sell.

Local rules change, so check the municipality's website for anything official. Each note links to its source.

A car that mostly stands still

Tell us roughly when the car last ran properly. It changes little about the offer and a lot about how we collect it.

Short ownership

If you only had the car for a year, bring whatever paperwork came with it, even if there is not much. What matters is that the car is registered in your name and that you have both parts of the registration code (tenaamstellingscode).

Where we collect in and around Utrecht

We arrange the collection with you anywhere in Utrecht and the towns around it. If the car is parked in the centre, in a permit zone or in a garage under a block of flats, tell us when you ask so we can plan for the street.

Questions from sellers in Utrecht

My car has not been driven for months. Can you still collect it?

Yes. Tell us when it last ran, whether the battery is flat and where it is parked. If it does not drive, we arrange a collection that does not depend on it driving.

My diesel may not enter the Utrecht centre. Does that lower the offer?

The zone limits where the car may drive, and we take the emission class into account like any other detail of the car. You can still sell it.

Do you buy cars without a valid APK?

Yes. The APK is the Dutch roadworthiness test. You do not need a new test before you sell the car to us. Tell us when it expired or what it failed on.

What do I need to ask for an offer?

Your number plate (kenteken) and the mileage. We look up the make, model, year and fuel in the Dutch vehicle register. You do not need any paperwork until the handover.
