Selling your car in Groningen

Groningen is a long way from the middle of the country, and people here often expect selling a car to be complicated. We make an offer on the same terms as anywhere else, in English.

Selling a car in Groningen

The University of Groningen, the Hanze University of Applied Sciences and the university medical centre (UMCG) bring in students and researchers from all over the world, many for two or three years. Cars are often bought cheaply, used for trips around the north, and sold when the contract ends.

The city centre is designed to keep through traffic out. Since the 1970s it has been divided into sectors, and cars cannot drive straight from one sector to the next through the centre. Most people cycle in town and use the car for trips out of the city.

Cars up here deal with winters, gravel and long empty roads, and many are older. We make offers on those too. A car that will not start still has a value.

Worth knowing in Groningen

Local rules change, so check the municipality's website for anything official. Each note links to its source.

Cars that stood still over winter

A car left unused for months often has a flat battery, and its APK (the Dutch roadworthiness test) may have expired without anyone noticing. Both are common, and neither stops us making an offer.

Student cars

Older, cheap and often passed between flatmates. The sale is straightforward as long as the car is registered in your name and you have both parts of the registration code (tenaamstellingscode).

Where we collect in and around Groningen

We arrange the collection with you in the city and across the province, including the smaller villages. If the car has been standing for months or will not start, tell us when you ask so we can plan a collection that does not depend on it driving.

Questions from sellers in Groningen

I bought the car from a flatmate and the paperwork is thin. Can I still sell it?

Yes, if the car was transferred to your name at the time. You need your registration card (kentekencard) and both parts of the registration code (tenaamstellingscode). A service book helps but is not required.

The car stood still all winter and the APK has expired. What now?

Tell us when the APK expired and whether the car starts. A car without a valid APK may not be driven on public roads, so we arrange a collection that does not depend on driving it.

Do you collect the car?

Yes, free of charge and anywhere in the Netherlands. Tell us where the car is parked and whether it drives, so we can plan the day.

What if the car does not start?

Tell us in the form. A car that does not drive is worth less, and we can still make an offer. We then arrange a way to collect it that does not depend on it driving.
